Andaman and Nicobar Island is a Union territory in India located at the juncture of Bay of Bengal and Andaman Sea. It is a group of Island, which comprise two islands namely Andaman Islands and Nicobar Islands. The capital of this union territory is Port Blair.
Andaman and Nicobar have been inhabited earlier by people with distinct backgrounds. Research shows that it has been inhabited for at least several thousands of years. It is ruled by Europeans, Chola Dynasty, Maratha Empire, Danish Settlers. Britishers, Japanese etc.
It became part of the Indian Country in 1950 and was declared as a Union Territory in 1956. India has been developing defence/military facilities on the islands since the 1980s. The islands now have a key position in India's strategic role in the Bay of Bengal and the Malacca Strait.
Following independence in 1947, there are two main groups that exist in the islands:
- (b) The Nicobari, who live throughout the many islands.
- (b)The Shompen, who are restricted to the interior of Great Nicobar.
In recent times, things have changed, so much so that people often refer to Andamans as “India in miniature”. All the major faiths are represented: Christianity, Hinduism, Sikhism, and Islam without any religious tension. All religious festivals are celebrated with splendour and vigour and inter-marriage between communities is common. The main languages spoken are Tamil, Bengali, Hindi and of course English.
There are almost 572 small islands that comprise Andaman and Nicobar and most of the part is covered with green forest and displays unmatched beauty when the sun shines through them. The marine life of the Islands is, however the highlight of the islands. The blue water is as clear as the glass and you can find many aquatic animals and corals in the sea.
Andaman and Nicobar has emerged as the most favourite tourist destination due to its picturesque islets. Andaman and Nicobar is gifted with enormous natural beauty as it is surrounded by mystique sea and lush green vegetation. There is an exciting aura about the islands which fills every adventure lover and travellers with enthusiasm. Its unspoiled sparkling water offers its visitors an excellent water sports adventure. Not only is water sports like Scuba diving and Snorkelling a possibility here, one can also indulge in pulse racing, and at the same time feel tranquil experience of trekking in the plush green hills.
